Your Questions Answered: Quality, Lean, and Six Sigma

Explore our comprehensive FAQ section to find answers to your most pressing questions about our consulting services.

What is the primary focus of your consulting services?

Our primary focus is on enhancing operational effectiveness through quality management, lean methodologies, and six sigma practices tailored to the unique needs of manufacturers.

How do you customize your consulting approach for different clients?

We begin with listening to your specific goals and operational challenges.  Then, we complete a thorough assessment of your current processes to develop a customized strategy to meet your improvement goals.

What is the typical duration of a consulting project?

The duration varies depending on the project scope and complexity, but we work closely with you to establish a timeline that meets your needs and objectives.

What is Six Sigma and how does it benefit my business?

Six Sigma is a data-driven methodology aimed at reducing variation within processes resulting in higher quality products, less scrap, improved margins, and improved customer satisfaction.

What is Statistical Process Control, and why should I use it?

Statistical Process Control (SPC) is a statistics-based method used to identify special cause variation (a shift or a trend) in a process.  It’s a powerful tool for monitoring process performance in real time, catching potential defects before they happen, so teams can act to keep the process in control rather than reacting to defects after the fact.

How do lean principles improve manufacturing processes?

Lean principles focus on eliminating waste, optimizing workflows, empowering people, and enhancing productivity, leading to more efficient and cost-effective manufacturing operations.

What are the steps to ISO 9001 implementation?

First, your company leaders should purchase and read ISO 9001 so that you can understand the expectations and assess your gaps to complying with the standard.

Next, I will complete both a remote and on-site visit and audit of your current system to complete my perspective on your strengths and gaps.

Then, we work together to create a plan to address any gaps, building the pieces of your management system custom fit to your business, within your desired timeframe.

Can you provide training for our team on these methodologies?

Yes, we offer comprehensive training programs and follow-up coaching designed to empower your team with the skills needed to implement quality, lean, and six sigma practices effectively.  Check out my Services page to see the training classes we offer.

How can I reduce defects?

Manufacturing defects come from inputs—processes, machines, materials—that aren’t controlled tightly enough for variation. Reducing defects means finding and controlling that variation. Start by mapping the process, identifying possible sources of variation, and studying which sources actually drive defects in the final product. Most of these projects fit naturally into the DMAIC framework: Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, Control.

What is the best root cause analysis process?

A true root cause is a source that, when removed, removes the defect—and when re-introduced, brings the defect back with it. The best root cause analysis process starts with divergent thinking to brainstorm every possible cause, then convergent thinking to narrow those down to the most likely candidates. From there, scientific experimentation is used not to prove a theory right, but to try to disprove it. The theory that survives genuine attempts to kill it is your root cause.

What is DMAIC?

DMAIC is a systematic process for solving problems.  It breaks the problem solving effort into five steps:  Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, and Control.  The combination of these steps ensures that the solution addresses the true root cause and is effective in eliminating the problem.

Can I use DMAIC in my CAPA system?

DMAIC and CAPA are fundamentally both problem solving systems.  So, yes, they are compatible and DMAIC can be used within a CAPA system.  But, in regulated industry CAPA will be scrutinized for compliance to applicable regulations.  You will want to make sure that your CAPA system uses the terminology regulators expect, such as “containment”, “correction”, and “corrective action”.
